You've created this incredible character, given them a name and invented their entire history – siblings, parents, friends, lovers. Now you must bring that character to life on the page. Choosing how your character will express itself through their speech is of paramount importance. You wouldn't make an English aristocrat speak like an Eastender, nor a good ol' boy from Mississippi speak with a Maine accent. Consistency, except in instances where inconsistency is called for, lend credibility to the overall effectiveness of the tale. A soldier on the Maginot Line isn't likely to find penguins dancing across his view as he sights in the enemy. From the craters of the moon, to the ballrooms of Imperial Russia, to a French foxhole during World War I, a story can unfold according to its own merits and within its own parameters with little regard to the specifics. Writing is as much a science as an art. Just as with any scientific field of study, there are rules that must be followed. These are: grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, etc. In addition to these basic conventions, there exist a number of factors that are tailored to fit the specific story and there exists a certain amount of flexibility available to a writer; opportunities to manipulate the conventions to serve their purposes, but the basic tenets remain unchanged. These include diction, tone, setting, and characterization, and are key components to creating the world of the story.
