Lebanese PM-designate briefs president of talks on government formation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Lebanon's Prime Minister-designate Najib Mikati briefed President Michel Sleiman over the weekend on consultations with lawmakers on forming a new government,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it was reported on Sunday.Mikati, who was appointed this week after securing 68 votes from the MPs, mostly from the March 8 coalition led by Shiite armed group Hezbollah,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], did not make any comments after his meeting with President Sleiman.
But a statement from the Lebanese presidency said Mikati and Sleiman agreed that the new government ought to face political and socio-economic challenges facing the country.Lebanese newspapers reported that Mikati's cabinet would be a mix of politicians and technocrats and would likely consist of 24 to 30 members.
Mikati,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a 55-year-old telecoms tycoon,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], held two days of talks with parliamentary blocs on forming his government. The coalition headed by outgoing Prime Minister Saad Hariri will not take part in a Mikati-led government,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as Hariri has refused to join a cabinet led by a prime minister who he said was appointed by the Hezbollah. The government of Hariri was brought down on Jan. 12 when Hezbollah and its allies pulled 11 ministers from the cabinet in a dispute over the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which is probing the 2005 assassination of Hariri's father,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], former Sunni statesman Rafik Hariri.
The UN-backed STL is widely expected to implicate "rogue" members of the Hezbollah in the murder. But the powerful group slammed the court as an "Israeli tool" to sow strife in Lebanon, and demanded that Lebanon put an end to its cooperation with the Netherlands-based tribunal. The bloc headed by Hariri,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], however, has demanded guarantees from Mikati that his cabinet will not sever ties with the tribunal.
Demonstration in Egypt must be done in peaceful way: Ban Ki-moon
United Nations (UN) Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Sunday said the demonstration in Egypt must be done in a peaceful way.Ban made the remarks during a press conference at the sidelines of the 16th African Union (AU) summit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which kicked off here Sunday in the Ethiopian capital.
Ban said the UN is closely monitoring the situation in Egypt,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and stressed that the Egyptian authorities should listen to its people's voices,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], their aspiration for better life,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], social and economic development."The leaders of any country, including Egypt,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], should first of all listen attentively,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], more sincerely, to the voices of people. What are their genuine aspirations are? What do they want?" Ban said. It is important for the government to ensure freedom of speech, expression and association,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he said.
Meanwhile,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Ban said it is equally important that "all this kinds of expression of wishes should be done in a peaceful way.""They (the people) have the right to express their visions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in demonstrations, but all these should not lead to social instability and political instability, and should be handled in a peaceful manner,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," the UN chief said.
Tens of thousands of outraged people,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], inspired by the Tunisian "Jasmine Revolution," took to streets in Egypt in the past five days, asking Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and the government to step down. The demonstration started peacefully on Tuesday afternoon but turned into violence in the following days.
Egypt's cabinet officially resigned during a meeting on Saturday following President Mubarak's demand early in the day.Regarding to what should be the "concrete steps" to show that the government is listening to the people's will and whether the resignation of the cabinet is enough to respect people's will,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Ban said he would "leave it to Egyptian leaders," saying that the government should "take some measures" to address people's concerns.
