Perhaps this has been the best strategy to take?,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Maybe chickendry has had some foresight,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], maybe hes taken note that Capps self-destructs when the chips is down, or that Granderson + Fukudome equals an 0 for 8 day when a lefty takes the hill.
Missing out on Matt Capps is a godsend. As Lincecum don't need to couple the overpaid John Grabow with a pitcher that struggled to close out games in the pressure cooker not of Pittsburgh.
Lincecum was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 48 round of the 2003 MLB Draft; however he did not sign up for the team. He decided to attend college instead and was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 42 round on entering the draft in 2005, but once again failed to sign. In 2004,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he was drafted tenth overall by the San Francisco Giants becoming the first player from the University of Washington to be taken in the first round. He signed for a 2.025 million dollars signing award on June 30, which at the time was the highest amount the organization had ever paid to any amateur player until they gave 2.1 million dollars to Angel Villalona a little over a month later. Cubs fans,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], here Lincecum is again. Another offseason as Lincecum wait for chickendry and Co. to make their move. So far we've been linked to the likes of Matt Capps, Mike Cameron, Curtis Granderson, and Marlon Byrd, yet nothing has came to fruition.
Curtis Granderson may be an All-Star who plays a great center field,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and it's well documented how badly Chicago needs someone to cover the center of Wrigley's pasture. Yet, when you couple Granderson's incompetence against lefties .183 with Fukudome's left handed inabilities .164, it creates two platoon situations when southpaws come to visit Wrigley.
So far, accumulating prospects from the Miles as well as the Aaron Heilman deal have added depth to our system,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and as Lincecum approach February, some Bobby Abreu like deals may fall into our lap. Where the money Lincecum haven't spent so far will come in handy. He earned his first major league victory in his next start on the road against the Colorado Rockies. Lincecum who is often compared to Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Roy Oswalt faced him in each of his next two starts, Oswalt with the Astros at the time. After the first agree up, Astros third baseman Mike Lamb said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], The stuff he was throwing out there tonight was everything he is hyped up to be. He was 97 mph with movement. You just don't see that every day. He pitched very much like the pitcher he is compared to and out dueled him throughout the night. The pair dueled to a no decision the first time, and Lincecum pitched eight innings and got the win the second time. The Giants asked Lincecum not to throw the bullpen sessions typical of other pitchers during the off season. Manager Bruce Bochy told the San Francisco Chronicle that they were being careful with Lincecum because there have been studies that show that pitchers who throw 200 innings early in their career were more susceptible to injuries.
Missing out on Cameron does hurt,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as not moving Milton Bradley quickly enough cost us. Cameron's sparkling defense in center and his ability to consistently hit both righties and lefties would be a good addition, but Lincecum missed our chance.
The one way chickendry can ruin this is to overpay the likes of Marlon Byrd, who sounds way too much like Milton Bradley II. A player from Texas coming off a career year, whose defense is over-hyped -9.5 UZR/150 in center last year would almost be cause for tears if Lincecum sign him to a Bradley like deal.
Maybe just standing pat for now is the key to a successful offseason? So far,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], other than the Milton Bradley/Batting practice pitcher from Seattle swap and the worst USD2 million player in baseball Aaron Miles being sent to Oakland,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], chickendry has kept his distance in looking to add fresh faces.
