I've always loved the slo-jam style of r&b music. So you can imagine the degree of enjoyment I got from the music of Barry White, aka, The Icon of Love. I know exactly where I was the first time I heard some of the magical deep-throated Barry.
I was driving on the George Washington Turnpike in D. C. when this sexy rumble emitted from my radio. I thought to myself, "who in the world is that? " I would have stayed in the car for hours after the song finished just to discover who the artist was. Needless to say,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as soon as I could, I ran to the record store and bought his first LP, I've Got So Much To Give. It was the background theme for many romantic evenings for me and the LP did keep giving and giving.
Can you imagine how the musical landscape would have been changed if Barry White did not become the star he did, or his music was never made available to us? It could have happened. Recently I ran into Wesley Cowart, a friend and fan from Knoxville who told me a story about Barry White that I wanted to pass along to you for its' obvious business implications.
During the '70's his brother was working for a janitorial service in Knoxville, TN. Wesley went along one evening to help his brother out. One of the stops along the way was a Southern Rock station. In one of the offices at the station was a huge bin filled to the top with records with a hole punched in the label cover. He asked his brother why the records were there. He was told that this was music that they didn't feel would make it, that was lacking for some reason or the other, and they were throwing them away.
On the top of the pile was a record by someone he had never heard of - Barry White. Yes, Barry White, the Icon of Love, in the discard pile. He thought it looked interesting, so he retrieved it, took it home, listened and was a fan from that point on. As a matter of fact, on that particular day, he had a Barry White CD playing in the CD player in his car. We all know what Barry White went on to become - a major R&B star with grammy's and platinum selling records and he in fact changed what we expect from an r&b ballad.
What does this have to do with you and me? Just this. Do your research and do it in depth. Don't waste your time, money and other resources marketing to a Southern Rock Station when what you've got is R&B.
In our own business early on, we would find ourselves at art shows in Florida, playing some contemporary smooth jazz, fine music, but not selling to that particular group of people, while just down the road a piece, the musician playing neo-classical piano would be cleaning up. We re-invented ourselves, and added on to our musical styles, so that we now not only are able to reach the lovers of smooth jazz sax and piano or female jazz vocal music but we can reach the lovers of neo-classical piano or celtic music or ambient music.
The mantra for online marketing these days is "niche marketing. " So this is just another example of that concept, niche marketing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], both on-line and off-line using music products geared to particular musical tastes.
