Together they had felt the presence of the risen Christ in the Sannerz community
householdand they had rejoiced in it. They had esablished such a degree of
mutual trust that they could not go back on it without inflicting deep wounds on
each other and injuring themselves. Indeedsome who left turned into embittered
critics and opponents. Others simply erased the communal episode at Sannerz
from their biographies. What better words to describe this than “desertion” or
“flight” or evenas Gertrud Dalgas put it“treason”? Eberhard’s disappointment
was justified. At the same time some relief can be sensed: they had overcomeafter
alland weathered the crisis. Life once more moved forward “toward the goal” – a
great goalone that compensated for all trials and testingone that could be lived
out every day: “unity and freedom.”
