The Boston Red Sox franchise is one of eight charter franchises of the American League and was founded in Boston in 1901. Early on the team dominated the American League with championship titles in 1912, 1915, 1916 and 1918. Then, for 86 years, the Red Sox did not win another championship. Now the Red Sox hold the current (2007) Word Series championship title.
In 1912 the Red Sox began playing at Fenway Park ballpark. It is located in the Fenway district of Boston and it is currently the oldest Major League baseball stadium. The park is famous for its left-field wall,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], nicknamed the Green Monster,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which prevents many home runs. For more on the Green Monster and other famous ballparks check out sports magazines like Sports Illustrated, Baseball Digest and Sports Weekly.
The team's trouble seemed to begin in 1920 when owner Harry Frazee sold George Herman Ruth Jr.,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], probably the most famous Boston Red Sox player. Nicknamed “Babe,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," “The Bambino" and “The Sultan of Swat," he has been named the greatest baseball player n history for his home run record and exuberant personality; he was the first player to hit 60 home runs in one season (1927); his lifetime total was 714, which Hank Aaron broke in 1974. Ruth began his career as a starting pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. In 1916 he pitched 13 scoreless innings during the 1916 World Series championship. After going to rivals the New York Yankees in 1920, Ruth went onto a stellar 15 seasons with the Yankees, while the Red Sox franchise crumbled from one of the most successful teams to one of the worst. Because of the timing of the trade and the losing streak, Ruth's trade was dubbed “Curse of the Bambino" and would not be lifted until 2004 when the Red Sox won their first World Series championship title in 86.
The Red Sox have had other great players besides Babe Ruth. One of them was Ted Williams. In 1939 the Red Sox bought the contract of outfielder Ted Williams from the San Diego Padres. Williams would become considered one of the greatest hitters of all time because of his consistency in high powered hitting and high averages. In 1946 with Williams, the Red Sox made it to the World Series but lost to the St. Louis Cardinals. Williams sustained an elbow injury and also later missed five seasons while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II and the Korean War and retired in 1960. For more on baseball players read magazines like Sports Illustrated, Baseball Digest and Sports Weekly.
