Prada is the latest in a growing list of luxury brands putting efforts into a stronger presence in China. WWD points out that Tod’s CEO Diego Della Valle recently threw a party for the brand in Beijing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Ermeneglido Zegna celebrated its centennial with a fashion show in Shanghai in July, and in June Ferregamo had a show in Hong Kong. Three years ago, Karl Lagerfeld and Fendi staged a show on the Great Wall and Donatella Versace hosted a fashion show and dinner in Beijing to fundraise for her Versace/One Foundation.
American Vogue has been focusing their business savvy on China lately. First the mag acknowledged the influx and import of Asian top models in a spread called “Asia Major,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],” last month, and most notably (and most recently) Anna Wintour took a biz trip to China which resulted in the announcement that Vogue will set up a Fashion Fund in China.
While New York, London, Milan and Paris will always be fashion mainstays, it seems Beijing (and China in general) is the next big fashion spot. Not only is it place where most designers produce much of their collections,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it has also become an important fast-growing market for luxury brands.
Prada saw a 51% surge in revenues in China in the past year, and is rumored to be considering a listing on the Hong Kong Stock exchange.
