Will the Commission propose lifting the ban on oral tobacco/snus?
Snus is a smokeless tobacco product. It is a moist snuff which is placed under the lip for extended periods of time. The sale of snus is illegal in the European Union. Sweden is the only country in the EU that is exempt from this ban. The derogation was granted on condition that Sweden shall take all the necessary measures to ensure that snus is not placed on the market in other Member States.
The opinion of the Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR) of February 2008 states that snus is a harmful product. This opinion calls for a very cautious approach; there are currently no plans to lift the ban.
Many restaurants and bars along Michigan’s border with the Buckeye State benefited after Ohio banned indoor smoking in 2006. Smokers slipped across the state line to drag on their favorite cigarettes with their beer or bucket of wings.[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
But on May 1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Michigan eateries and other work sites must be smoke-free or face fines under the state’s smoking ban. The bonanza for border bars and restaurants that relied on smokers — especially those from Ohio — may be extinguished.
Corey Beljhelm,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 27, of Toledo, who comes to M.T. Loonies in Temperance about once a week, said he’ll stay in Ohio and “just stand outside and smoke.”
Scott Rogowski, general manager of Sidelines in Lambertville,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said he hopes to see more patrons. He has seen new faces since the restaurant’s upper level went smoke-free Jan. 1. Though smokers grumbled, like they did in Ohio, he assumes they’ll adapt.
Indiana, which has discussed — but not approved — a statewide smoking ban,marlboro cigarettes supplier, is “a little far to drive,” he said.

Even when the state legislature banned smoking in restaurants and bars in 2003, the clubs, posts and lodges were spared, making them some of the last remaining sanctuaries for Connecticut’s bar-stool puffers.
But that sanctuary could be in jeopardy now,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with some area clubs adding no-smoking sections or banning smoking.
Over the past seven years, as mounting evidence has documented the health hazards of secondhand smoke, several private clubs have restricted smoking to at least part of their establishments, with more getting ready to move in that direction.
