Who Goes on Transatlantic Cruises?
Transatlantic on the Queen Mary 2
There's some debate among regular cruisers as to which way is best, east or west. For a lot of people, the decision depends on where you live.
For Brits, the advantage of the eastbound transatlantic crossing is that on a Cunard package, you get a couple of days in New York before the voyage, which is always exciting and particularly appealing at the moment, thanks to the favourable exchange rate. Personally, I like the idea of starting the trip in all the hustle and bustle of the city and getting the flight, inevitably the least pleasant part of any vacation, out of the way first. And stocking up on New York fashions before boarding the
The downside, if there could be a downside of a transatlantic cruise sailing from New York, is that you lose an hour every day during the crossing, so those who like to party hard on board either have to stay in bed an hour longer each morning to catch up on sleep or adjust their partying to suit the shorter days. On a westbound voyage, you gain an hour every day.
For North Americans, the reverse might apply: fly to London and get the intensive sightseeing done before boarding the ship in Southampton for the westbound transatlantic crossing and settling into the luxurious cocoon of life on board, looking forward all the time to your arrival in New York, which has to have one of the most dramatic approaches of any port in the world, as anybody who has stood on deck at dawn as the skyscrapers of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty come into view will know.
Either way, if you do the flight first and then travel 'home' on the ship [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you arrive with no jetlag and as much shopping from your city break at the beginning of the cruise as you can carry.
I'm in New York, waiting to board Cunard's Queen Mary 2 this afternoon for the six day Atlantic crossing back to Southampton.
As for the weather [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there are no guarantees in the Atlantic [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]! A friend with many transatlantic crossings behind him told me that the weather you have in New York tends to follow you on an eastbound crossing, which means I have six days of grey skies and strong winds ahead of
Sailing eastbound isn't quite as exciting; Southampton does have a fine maritime history but is no vision of beauty with which to end such a wonderful voyage.
