Lcd Tvs And Plasma Tvs - An Unbiased Comparison | A Arts-and-Entertainment Article
Overall Picture Quality: The present TFT-LCD flat screens and the plasma screens both can produce clear, bright, crisp images for a great picture quality. But for use in home theaters the plasma screens show better performance than the LCDs do. The plasma screen contains gas cells that are arranged in such a way that the light does no leak out between the cells. This enables the plasma screens therefore can display more intense blacks, making these screens very suited to those scenes in movies and TV scenes in which light and dark lit scenes are shown together.
Now for the technology behind the LCD, which shines a backlight through the layer that is the LCD, this causes the blacks not to be as deep and for there to be some leaking from pixels of light.
This is not to suggest that the LCD screens do not make good TVs; the models today have higher contrast that help with the displaying of the true blacks, but the plasma screens still are a bit better.
Viewing Angle: Plasmas used to have quite an advantage in the viewing angle area but the newest of the LCDs are getting better, some other info on this below...
The viewing angle is still a problem at times though between LCDs and plasmas. When you have a cheap LCD rather than a more quality one,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you can still see the picture deteriorate when viewing takes place from the side more than when you do the same type viewing with plasmas.
Burn-In and Image Retention: technologically the LCD TVs do have an advantage; these do not have a tendency to get burn-in,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and as far as image retention in these TVs, or image sticking as it is called,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it is usually can be reversed completely.
Realize though that while the plasmas can suffer burn-in and image sticking can happen in LCDs, and that both conditions can then cause image retention, that these are two different drawbacks.
Burn-in is not as prevalent with the newer plasma screens like it was in the older models, this is based on fairly regular viewing habits. With the LCD screens today the image sticking is not as likely to happen when regular viewing habits are enacted.
Viewing Distance: Take the same size of both the plasma and LCD and the LCD has the smoothest picture of the two, as long as it is the same pixel count.
This does mean though that you have to be viewing within the proper distance. For the HDTVs it is said that you should view at a distance equal to the width of the screen times 2. And if this distance show to be under nine feet than you need a LCD instead of the plasma TV.
Requirements for Power: LCDs come out with the advantage here by consuming less electrical power. The figures show that LCD screens use about 30% less in power over the plasma screens of the same size.
Lifetime: The two technologies are about the same on this anymore. The plasma and LCD TVs both have been proven to have a half life of sixty thousand hours. If you just figure half this time of thirty thousand hours the TVs would last about 14 years when watching them for about 6 hours a day. The people in the USA replace TVs about every seven years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]!
One will find that LCD and plasma TVs are both manufactured through very durable and reliable types of technologies. The quality of the make is more important for the lifetime of the TV than the different kinds of technologies.
