MARLBORO —
A Marlborough man drove drunk with four unsecured children in his car early New Year's morning,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], police said.
Luis Montero, 37, was arrested after being pulled over on Hosmer Street around 2:30 a.m. Police had seen his car swerving and crossing the double lines, Detective Martha Shea said.
The four children in the car were all under the age of 16, Shea said.
At the police station, Montero took a Breathalyzer test and registered a blood alcohol level of .17 percent,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], court records said. The state's legal limit is .08 percent.
Police helped get the car's passengers home safely.
Montero, of 37 Briarwood Lane,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], was charged with driving under the influence of liquor, a marked lanes violation, child endangerment while OUI,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], two counts of having a child between 5 and 12 years old in the car without a seat belt, and two counts of having a passenger under the age of 16 without a seat belt, police said.
Judge David Cunis ordered Montero released without bail at his arraignment in Marlborough District Court yesterday, court records said. He is due back in court Feb. 28.
When he's home, Johnson puts his business and certified public accountant skills to work as a consultant so he can make money to go back to the ship.
"I'm just doing what I'm supposed to be doing," he said.
His most recent trip took him to Togo and Durban, South Africa. Other trips have been to help those in Benin,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Liberia and Sierra Leone.
And while his role is to ensure mechanical support for the medical staff, he has a hands-on role in healing as well.
"Everybody is asked to adopt a patient. You read to them after dinner. You just go and spend time with them."
Aboard ship, you hear the stories, like the one about the boy in Liberia who had both his hands cut off because he wouldn't fight for the rebels.
You learn how one doctor "did 45 cataract operations in one day," and that "it's not uncommon for families to walk for a week to get to the ship."
