fway via the forest, I stopped to cook noodles. The inexpensive 3-ounce kettle was from a greenback store, and it worked nice. I was merry, because from the catalog specifications, the priceless titanium pots are always heavier, probably because they're also thick and with also numerous gadgets.
I had apt use a small twig-fire when my homemade alcohol stove didn't cater ample heat. I later studied namely isopropyl alcohol doesn't blaze as peppery as the alcohol accustomed because a gas cumulative, merely the twigs worked in whichever case.
Backpacking On The Beach
After dining [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I walked to Lake Michigan, and sat up on a massive sand dune. I saw the waves shove ice up onto the vacant shore. Coyotes began to roar in the distance, and the smokes coiled in. I was on the beach looking for petoskey stones when the sleet began. Backpacking in March has its risks.
I was in escaping shoes, and it would be underneath freezing that night. In northern Michigan, March is definitely portion of winter. My feet stayed warm meantime I hiked, but I hadn't planned on them getting rainy. At fewest I had a pair of warm, dry socks for sleeping.
Ultralight Backpacking Equipment
It was the first period I used my GoLite Breeze backpack, which weighed merely 13 ounces. I was hiking with almost 9 pounds on my behind, and that merely because I threw in some canned food. I was working light, but I knew the jungles here and felt snug with my abilities.
My down sleeping bag was a 17-ounce Western Mountaineering HighLite. It was the first time I would use it below freezing (It buffet 25 degrees fahrenheit that night). Fortunately, it wasn't too windy.
At the corner of the forest [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], backward the dunes, I set up my small tarp. I piled pine pins and dead bracken ferns under it, finishing just as it became dark. This made a warm mattress, and I slept well, listening to the coyotes, and to the waves pushing ice nigh in the lake.
In the a.m. I was happy to look only a dusting of snow. My one-pound sleeping bag had been warmer than my three-pounder - and I thought that was light. I poured alcohol in the cut-off bottom of a pepsi can (my 1/2-ounce backpacking stove) and made tea. After some crackers I was soon hiking in my mostly-dry shoes, along the Lake Michigan shoreline.
Backpacking Lessons Learned
I ended my tumble that p.m., with a hike to the countryside of Empire, seven miles away. I was mostly satisfied. Only two problems: My tarp was too small [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the alcohol I brought was the bad type.
After backpacking in Michigan for annuals, I understand it well. I understand where to ascertain dead grass and bracken ferns, case in point, to make a lukewarm bed in a few minutes. Knowledge, obviously, tin be as expensive as expensive backpacking gear.
